Chateau Interior

Sunday 20th July: This chateau is in good condition, but is still under restoration, however, the interior has been very well preserved, and portrays extravagance and an idea of life in the 17th century for royalty in France. We learned that this was one of the first dining rooms ever built as the French typically ate on occasional tables in living rooms. An example of a menu back then included Pigeon Soup! Every inch of the wall and ceilings were covered in art, such as this huge ceiling painting by Le Brun. Louis XIV played backgammon here, agruably! Apparently the kitchen was still operational until the late 1950s! There are candles everywhere, which are lit for evening openings in the summer, and sometimes classical music is played. Next time we'll go in the evening. Very interesting.

Albert Dock

Monday 7th July: After short drive into Liverpool via beautiful Chester, the industrial scenes around the Wirral and the slick Merseyside tunnel, and we arrived at the Albert Dock, in the 2008 European Cultural Centre, Liverpool. Immense civic buildings on the edge of the Mersey estuary demonstrate days-gone-by prosperity from shipping industry at this world heritage shipping port. But the docks have now been revolutionized, with shops, arenas, galleries, museums and many other tourism facilities. We managed to see the 'Beatles Story' and the 'Tate Liverpool' gallery, as well as check out the interesting shops, and watch the yachts en route on a oceanic race. Apparently on the following weekend, they were expecting 70 tall ships also in the dock!

Tate Modern

Thursday 3rd July: Directly across the Thames from St Pauls is an old power station now houses the Tate Modern Art Gallery. To get there is a very pleasant walk across the Millenium Bridge, with views back to the rising cathedral, up and down the Thames and the imposing art gallery building ahead of us! Its a huge gallery with contemporary and art from this century, some is fairly challenging, but compelling to see. We were lucky to miss a torrential downpour as we were seated in the café behind the glass-protected views of the Thames.

Giverny and Monet

Thursday 26th June: We hired a car and drove 1 hour to Monet's garden at Giverny. Well worth the visit! The garden is so tranquil, and his house is inspiring and very traditional, with french style opening windows looking across the flowers and greeny. The water garden is very relaxing to walk around or sit and take in the sound of the birds and nature. An artist would be very inspired by this environment.

Lovely Louvre

Wednesday 25th June: Spent most of today at the Louvre. You are allowed to take photos here! Apart from the wonderful Mona Lisa, the Horses of Marly and Aphrodite, we saw quite a lot of the art throughout the musée. We were are compelled to see not only the historic european paintings, but also the heritage tapestries, sculptures and china, the greek and roman sculptures, and the sheer magnitude and history of the building.

Pompidou

Monday 23rd June: The Pompidou Centre was far better than we expected. The views from the rather exposed tubular escalators were fantastic, if you didn't suffer from vertigo! The top of the building rises above the Paris skyline, so you can see all the prominent buildings of Paris from here - a suprise! The collection of modern art is memorable, rich with famous paintings and sculptures, compelling you to see it all!
